The audio-lingual method is used in teaching foreign languages. It
also called the Army method. It is based on the behaviorist theory. This
approach to language learning is similar to the direct method. Like the direct
method, the audio-lingual method advises that students should be taught a
language directly, without using the students' native language to explain new
words or grammar in the target language. But there are also differences, unlike
the direct method, the audio-lingual method does not focus on teaching
vocabulary. Rather, the teacher drills students in the use of grammar. The
instructor presents the correct model of a sentence and the students have to
repeat it. Then the teacher continues by presenting new words for the students
to sample in the same structure. In the audio-lingual method, there is no
explicit grammar instruction, everything is connected to memorizing.
